Matte is a creative agency, focused on culture and content creation. Matte has become known for producing events such as ‘BLACK,’ ‘Full Moon,’ and the ‘Kitsuné Club Nights,’ which have become staples of NYC nightlife since 2010. Catapult work with MATTE on the live event production and logistics for BLACK and FULL MOON.

On July 8th, they ran Full Moon Festival on Governors Island, their largest NYC event. Full Moon Festival is a boutique New York City music festival – a waterfront party across an open field on Governors Island. Three stages, 6 bars, independent food vendors and a mass meditation. The festival is all overlooked by the Statue of Liberty. Created and hosted by MATTE Projects for the 7th consecutive year.

Event objectives, planning and execution

The objective was to apply Catapults’ experience and knowledge of large-scale one-off music festivals and activation to Mattes content and vision. With immersive art installations, artisan food stalls, a faux beach, 3 stages and some of the best views in NYC, the aim was to create an outdoor, summer yet multi-dimensional atmosphere.

Catapult were responsible for taking the event from concept to reality – designing the production and operations plan based within the forecasted budget. Leading every element of technical and operational design, through procurement to fulfilment. We were responsible for all logistics, vendors, installation, operation and take down on site, working with both the client and individual artists. The only way to access the island is by ferry – including the 8,000 attendees and every single piece of staging, lighting, AV, branding and catering. Timetabling and logistics were just part of the fun.

MATTE curated a diverse line-up of cultural icons and rising musicians who took over three stages, including a stage built in partnership with French label Maison Kitsune. Each act offered mesmerizing performances that encompassed the energy and intimacy of the island.

The event was packed with 8,000 attendees. It generated over 700k social impressions. It was reviewed by Vogue, The Independent, MixMag, Gothamist and Time Out to name a few – building up its reputation as one of the highlights of the NYC summer. “If you’re looking to make the most of a NYC summer day, it doesn’t get much better than music on the beach with good company.
